Fall Break at Folly Beach
I just had my fall break and my friends and I took a trip to South Carolina. Since being back I cannot stop talking about it! The trip was so fun and, to put it plainly, I am in love with South Carolina. The people, the city, the food, the charm!! It was a trip full of joy and one I will cherish and look back on often.
If you are thinking of taking a trip somewhere, then look no further. Pack up the car, grab your loved ones, and head to South Carolina! In this blog post I am going to share with you recommendations and highlights from my trip so you don’t have to worry about the planning. I’ve got ya covered!
Where to Stay
Here is a little peek at the Airbnb, The Tabby Shack, we stayed at – it was such a lovely space! There were 7 of us girls and we had more than enough room.
The Tabby Shack was the perfect Airbnb for us. Our host made sure we had everything we could need which provided a space for us all to rest and enjoy each other’s company. A space to laugh, cry, and have conversations!
During our time in South Carolina we stayed in a little beach town known as Folly. The city of Folly is home to 2,4oo residents who are surrounded by the beach, great food, and small town charm. Our little shack was a 2 minute walk to the beach, and you better believe we took advantage of that!
Folly is about a 20 minute drive to Charleston, which we drove several times. This might not be the move for some, but I personally loved being a little outside of Charleston. It allowed us to explore different parts of South Carolina, and Folly was a great way to experience the city as a local.
More About Folly
Since we were a 2 minute walk from the beach, we got up every morning to see the sunrise and jump into the ocean. What a dream! It was a beautiful way to start the day.
There is a main strip in Folly that has little shops, local dive bars, and the pier. This little strip was a hub of community and fun. We went out a couple of nights and listened to live music while playing the card game Dutch Blitz.
Locals were so intrigued by the game they started coming up and asking about it or to join in. We made friends with some and they gave us recommendations.
What to Do
Folly:
- A beach day is a must! The beach was so pretty and clean, and not crowded at all.
- Listen to live music at the local dive bars! Some that standout are The Bounty Bar, Chico Feo, and The Washout. This was one of my favorite parts of the trip. Not only was it enjoyable to listen to live music, but it was such a fun way to meet people and learn about the locals. (Play Dutch Blitz if you want to intrigue the locals).
- Explore the little shops on the strip! There were so many neat surf shops. McKelvin’s was one we stopped in and it has been around since 1965.
- Sunset at the pier! Our last night we did this and it was a great way to end the trip. We also discovered that they have beach volleyball at the pier. So many people were out playing! Wish we would have known about this sooner, but now you know!
- Rent bikes! We looked into this and ended up not doing it but I would recommend. Would be a great way to explore new parts of the city.
Charleston:
- Walk King Street! This is the main shopping street in Charleston. There are art galleries, charming buildings, coffee shops, and eateries. This street honestly overwhelmed me, but I still think it is nice to see and say you’ve walked it.
- Sullivan’s Island! Sullivan’s was so beautiful. The sand was like powder and you could see Folly from the beach! There is a little street with shops that we walked as well.
- Wander around! I love walking random streets and looking at homes. Such a great way to find niche parts of a city and familiarize yourself with the area.
- College of Charleston! We walked the campus and it was so beautiful. Historic buildings and spanish moss filled the campus.
Coffee
South Carolina was full of cute, little coffee shops! Here are a few I really loved:
Harken
Harbinger
Sorelle
Food
We had some great food while in South Carolina! Here are some of my favorites:
- Saltwater Cowboy: This was near Sullivan’s Island and I had Mahi Tacos and they were amazing. We sat outside on the marina.
- The Bounty Bar: This was a FUN dive bar in Folly. It was around 10pm and I was starving, so I had a second dinner – hamburger and fries, just classic bar food but so good.
- Harbinger: We drove into Charleston and had brunch here one morning. I had an amazing quiche. They had a little outdoor patio where we sat and enjoyed our breakfasts and coffees. This also was one of the coffee shops mentioned above.
- Rita’s: I had a friend who recommended this place. He said I would have the best cheeseburger of my life and he wasn’t lying. Do yourself a favor and get the cheeseburger.
- The Pineapple Hut: Pineapple whip! It was just like Pineapple Dole Whip you get at Disney. A fun, sweet treat!
And that’s all I have on South Carolina! We had a great time and I totally recommend making the trip. This was our last trip in college as a group being that some of my friends are graduating this December, so it was a sweet time for us all to be together and reflect on the past 4 years.
